Spring Quilt Retreat

San Juan Quilter's Guild held their Spring Retreat this weekend. We took over a conference room at the Hampton Inn and about twenty of us stayed there, well appointed immaculate rooms, and very cooperative, friendly staff.
Quite a few other members chose to be day campers, going to their own homes each night.
Below are some pics of some of the busy bee quilters and their projects.
The theme was "Mardi Gras" and some wore fancy hats like Pat here showing a pic. of one of the Works In Progress [commonly referred to by the acronym WIP!]
Then there is Roena, who for many years has been the recipient of exotic lingerie at each retreat. She will come in one morning to begin sewing and find something like this draped over her machine.
Notice the $1 tucked into the flower, the jewel trim and the note that said "For a good time call Ro, 555.5555"! [Very cheeky!]
This time the embellishment was appropriately Mardi Gras oriented!
Then there's Christie with her very Mardi Gras-like gorgeous quilt, the "Christmas Pickle".
It was a bit of a challenge and received other names from it's maker during it's construction!
This pic shows the colors better but doesn't show Christie's sweet face! The quilt literally glows as if it has a light behind it.
Her friend Carole hard at work......
Ta da! The fruit of her labor...........
More "fruit", a cute schnibbles!
And friend Lori hiding behind her table runner!
This is Monika almost hidden behind her delightful scrappy quilt.
More quilt "campers", mother and daughter these two, it's a family affair!
These blocks are beautifully hand painted.
Lots to smile about here............
and a good beginning on a black, white and red French Braid.
Jeanie's pretty quilt lacks only the top border.......
while Jane is working on these complex-looking blocks.
Here's Lael modeling her first completed project..........
and Judy with her "coffee bag"!
The velcro tab inside the top of the bag keeps the cups separate and upright, and the inside is made from actual coffee bags, very clever!
The other Pat with one of her efforts........
Norma and her lovely quilt..........
Letha gathering yards of fabric...........
and with granddaughter Willow wearing the "swirly" skirt Grandma made for her!
Rosella's "Twisted Bargello"..........
Ruthe's stunning quilt..........
and her hard-won paper pieced block!
Some sampler blocks.............
Wendy's bright and cheerful Disappearing 9 Patch..........
my insanely wacky scrap quilt from "Log Cabins With Attitude"..........
my hand appliqued Sun Bonnet Sue blocks from eBay, I sashed them with a few 30's FQ's from stash.........
and another eBay rescue top, entirely hand pieced that lacked only a border when I purchased it.
These three now go onto my personal stack of tops awaiting my attention at the longarm!
I think that was a very productive quilt camp, don't you?
Oh, and it's been snowing again the past two days!
Welcome spring!

Quilting On The Orient Express

This was the theme for the Fall retreat of the San Juan Quilt group and on Saturday an intrepid group had planned a thematic dinner appropriate for the Orient Express.
They used their wonderful quilter's imaginations to come up with the meal and all of these wonderful decorations.

Fabric fortune cookies with quilt style quotes inside.......
Coolie hats on the drinking straws..........
Miniature take out boxes filled with sweet treats........
the Orient Express steaming along the buffet............

the Asian style buffet...........

and a Panda bear with his sleeping mask because we all needed extra sleep after this weekend!
The Uncompahgre Bed and Breakfast, an historic building in Montrose, CO. was an old schoolhouse, now a charming Bed and Breakfast with accommodation for 26 overnight, so it fit our quilt retreaters very well. We set up shop in the large dining room, and all weekend our machines whirred as laughter and chatter filled the building from early morning to the wee small hours[ for a valiant few!]
Some of us gathered for a photo-op Saturday on the front porch, I remembered how to set up the timer on my camera so I was able to run back and hop in the picture [that's me on the far right in front!]

These first two pics in black, white and red are my work, they are to be single bed size for our two older grandsons. Obviously I still have a ways to go to get them large enough but they don't have to be finished until Christmas so I think I can do it! They are taking a little longer because I have to mostly make up the design as I go to fit around their chosen logos, the Knight's Cross [or Iron Cross] for Daniel's and the Arizona Cardinals Logan's favorite team.
The following pics show sewing progress from some of the other retreaters:
