This is the third UFO finish for 2009, I quilted it in January & it only needed binding but that still took a bit of time because I made the piped binding. Here are some of the leftover pieces, I wish I could think of a use for them because I have other bits left from previous quilts too.
Here's a close up of the piped binding, it's a pretty cool technique & makes a very nice finish.The piping fabric is the same as one of the orange colors in the body of the quilt so it highlights & separates the binding.
I wish I had a better pic of the whole quilt, I have been thinking about asking DH to make some sort of pulley system for me so that I could just clip my quilts onto a board?or something and hoist them up to get good photos. Hmmm, just what DH needs another project challenge, lol!
Meantime here is another view of the backing which is that lovely soft PBR brushed cotton..
The original idea for the quilt came from an Australian magazine, Quilter's Home Companion[my personal favorite] Aussie niece saw it & loved it so I made I decided to make the quilt for her. I was able to duplicate the colors & the quilting that she liked so much & although the quilting isn't necessarily what I would have done left to my own devices it was super easy & fast & I think quite effective.
I used an olive drab sort of color for the quilting thread -I have found that to be a great blender color especially for quilts with a lot of red & black.
The batting is my favorite, Quilter's Dream 100% wool, soft & light as a feather & it gives good definition to the quilting.
This is one of the three quilts going to Australia with us in May so I will have them appraised for insurance by Karen Housner as they have to go in my checked luggage.
The third, a baby quilt for another niece, is at this time on the LA & will be finished up tomorrow, God willing!
