I am linking up with Vintage Thingies Thursday.
It's been waaay too long since I joined VTT but I was checking it out at Coloradolady's blog and noticed that Missy Shay has posted vintage wedding gowns, much older than my Mum's but it brought hers to mind.I wish I had it now, Mum made it all herself on a treadle machine from wartime - available materials in Australia. The picture makes me very nostalgic, almost to the point of tears!
Isn't she beautiful?
Mum and Dad were married 70 years ago, on February 9th.1942.
Dad was in uniform, Royal Australian Airforce, a dashing chap isn't he?
My Uncle Albert far left was in Royal Australian Army uniform.
My Dad had been in training on a base in Queensland and did not know for sure if he could get away to Sydney [over 700 miles] for the wedding because things were so unsettled.
At the last minute he got leave and thumbed a ride to Sydney on the night before the wedding!
When my Mum came to meet him at the altar of St.John's church in Sutherland, as he took her hand from my Grandfather he leaned in winked and said "G'day Toots"!
When I asked him why, he said he thought my Mum might be nervous and he wanted to make her more relaxed!
They were a sweet couple.
What a sweet story, and beautiful photos! Love those gowns...they were so elegant!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful memory... and what great photos.
ReplyDeleteI love your mom's wedding dress. She must have been a really good seamstress to make such a beautiful dress. Did she make quilts like you do?
Sure glad you dad made it down there that day in time for the wedding. It sounds like all of those 70 years were worth hitching a ride to get there.
Lovely post..
They had 60 great years and left a goodly legacy of their descendants for the world.
DeleteMy Dad missed Mum terribly the last 10 years, but he has gone to join her now.
Tanks for sharing such a personal part of your family. Her gown was truly lovely. Very nice looking couple. We cannot keep everthing.
ReplyDeleteHow very sweet Ros. My inlaws will celebrate 70 years in June if they both make it. My mother in law is currently in the hospital with pneumonia and seriously ill. They have had such a wonderfully long married life with 5 amazing children and grands and great grands.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful pictures to have! Loved your post!
ReplyDeleteI just LOVE that your VTT was more than just a thing! What a sweet story, and what a beautiful couple!

ReplyDeleteGreat pictures. Your Mom was a beautiful bride.
ReplyDeleteYou're mom was a beautiful young woman and what a handsome young soldier your dad was... They are both just beaming in their wedding photo. Your mom's dress is so striking. Did she make the dresses for her bride's maids as well?
ReplyDeleteWonderful, wonderful post! Thanks for sharing.
Hugs!
Such a sweet story. I'm picturing your Dad rushing to get there in time. They made for a beautiful couple.
